As I prepare myself mentally for the Big Move and The Arrival, I am reminded of two of my favorite writers. Firstly, Pratchett with his ‘ The Last Continent’ of which the author says: “This is not a book about Australia. No, it’s about somewhere entirely different which happens to be, here and there, a bit . . . Australian.”
Rincewind is stranded in a land where it’s always hot, people talk strangely, drink beer and tend to understate danger with the phrase ‘she’ll be right’.
The other author is Mercedes Lackey, especially the Valdemar series. They are predominantly ‘coming of age’ stories. Practically every book at one point tells the story of a new Herald (trainee) coming to the Collegium where everything is new and different. The trainee gets to study a lot, make new friends and gets to learn about responsibility and fending for themselves.
In my heart of hearts, I’ve always wanted to be a trainee. Focused solely on study, part of The Big Collegium, working hard and discovering the world and my place in it. Now it really feels like I’m getting all that (well, minus the blue-eyed telepathic horse).
I can’t wait.
